Dr. Elma Durmisevic is a leading architecture authority on Reversible/Circular Building Design and Transformable Buildings. She's the founder of 4D Architects in Amsterdam, founding director of Dutch Laboratory for Circular Buildings (Green Transformable Building Lab) and Green Design Centre for South East Europe in Mostar and lead architect of pioneering circular building projects in Europe. Dr. Elma Durmisevic holds a PhD at Delft University of Technology on Transformable Building Structures, and Design for Disassembly in Architecture. As Associate Professor at the University of Twente, Durmisevic developed a master program for dynamic and sustainable buildings that introduced green engineering in industrial design of architecture. Her broad engagement spreads from founder of 4D Architects and Green Transformable Building Lab to EU UIA Expert for Super Circular Estate in the Netherlands, lead development of Digital Deconstruction Platform for circular economy in construction (EU Interreg project), Visiting Professor at Milan Polytechnic University, guest lecturer at the academy of Royal Association of Dutch Architects, Royal Institute of British Architects, USA Build Reuse platform and jury member of the Dutch Building Award, Global Impact Award Dubai 2024. During 25 years of design and pioneering research Durmisevic developed design guidelines and protocol for design for disassembly and reversible buildings, of which many are integrated into EU guidelines for design of circular buildings and form a design check list of Brussels Region. Dr. E. Durmisevic developed tools for measuring circularity and reversibility of buildings such as: Reversible BIM, Reuse Potential tool, Transformation Capacity Tool, Circular Building Index/Profile, Circular Building Compass, Reuse Potential Index App. Currently Dr. Elma Durmisevic is engaged as Director at 4D Architects, founding director of EU Laboratory for Green Transformable Buildings in the Netherlands, and International Green Design Foundation, leads development of Green and Circular Building Compass for Health Care facilities (Caring Nature projects), development of digital table for multicriteria decision making at city planning level (EU REGEN project) and development of guidelines and protocol for transformation of existing office buildings into affordable housing (Building Converter Project).
